Abraham had trusted in the LORD. He lived in tents, never establishing his roots in the land. God promised that He would bless him and his seed, giving him the land of Canaan as his inheritance. When the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross, He was the one voluntary offering who could meet our need and bring us back into relationship with God. In our fast-paced, technology-driven age, this Old Testament name of God might seem irrelevant.

What, after all, can an ancient name of Deity mean for us today? The story of Abraham offering Isaac in Genesis 22 is more than just a dramatic illustration of faith and obedience. It is a preview of the salvation God has provided us in the great sacrifice of His Son on the cross.

God asked Abraham to give his beloved son, Isaac. But God could ask this only because He would give His own beloved Son, Jesus, to be offered up as a sacrifice for sin. But on Calvary, there was no substitute provided. Jesus, the Lamb of God, died there for our sins. God has provided for our eternal salvation by giving the greatest gift He could give—His Son—to die for our sins. And so, Paul says, having given the greatest possible gift, God will surely also freely provide for all our needs—even our smaller, daily needs.

He knows what we need, and He will provide. He is Jehovah Jireh. Years in the future, when Isaac is approaching 40, he was meditating praying in a field when his wife Rebekah came to him. The two became part of the lineage of Christ. The Lord had made promises to Abraham about this young man. From the great needs of our soul for issues like salvation and forgiveness to the yearning of our heart for a spouse, God Provides - He is our Jehovah-Jireh. God Sees. God is with Us.
